The easiest way to get a house is to complete the "Who killed the Tax Collector Quest" 
in Seyda Neen (Starter Town) 

When you find the tax collectors body bring the money back to the guy you created your 
character at, the first bulding you got off after the ship. Give him the 200 gp back 
and he will ask you to find and execute the Tax collectors murderer. He is in a shack 
behind the trader building. Go into his house, kick his but and take his stuff, and 
Wola free house, when you go back to the guy at the regestry office he will give you 
500 gp and since you were supposed to execute the guy you won't get in trouble for 
killing him so you can hang in his house and store stuff in the nice chest he has 
sitting by the door, and sleep in his comforable hammok. 

Free and easy abode in the very first town. Serves you well early in the game.
